Rural 2-Story House Burns

01/02/2007

At 01:29 this morning this rural 2-story house burned to the ground while the family was on vacation in California. Due to it's remote location, and hidden among trees along Lake Labish, no one noticed the fire until the house was fully involved. Marion County Fire District #1 responded with a 1st alarm assignment of 28 firefighters that included 3 engines, 3 tankers, a medic unit, ladder truck, 2 rescue trucks and a battalion chief. The first-in company reported the roof and second floor caving in as they arrived 9 minutes after the call. The house was insured, but a total loss. There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The attached photos show all that remains of the small 2-story house.

Ice- slickened roads caused serious injuries to driver

Ice- slickened roads caused serious injuries to the driver of this submerged vehicle early today. He was westbound in the 6100 block of Sunnyview Road NE when his vehicle left the roadway and ended up submerged in the Little Pudding River, east of Salem. Marion County Fire District #1 Technical Rescue Team members extended a system of ground ladders to the drivers side of the vehicle and extricated the driver through the window. He was then stabilized in a Stokes rescue stretcher and a rope rescue haul system was used to move him up to the road. The patient was suffered multiple serious injuries and was severely hypothermic even with the relatively short extrication time. He was transported to Salem Hospital by Marion County Fire District 1 medics.

Time of call: 09:12
1st arrival: 09:17
Pt Extricated: 09:37

The vehicle was completely hidden from view of the road and left little trace of the accident when it went into the water. A resident in the area just happened to glance out her window and saw the vehicle leave the road. Without this observation, it may have been days before this vehicle, and no doubt the victim, would have been discovered.

There were no working smoke detectors in the house. The house was a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The American Red Cross is working to provide for the family. Attached photos show Marion County firefighters working to extinguish what is left of the home.
